Scope and Purpose: That Algeria is, by its very nature, multiculturally and linguistically diverse is crystal clear. Sociolinguistic diversification in Algeria and other Maghreb counties is traceable to the long-term extensive sociolinguistic contact between communities of speakers and speakers of distinct ethnolinguistic roots. A quick glance over the long arc of history indicates that Algeria has been inhabited by many socioethnic groups, which vary on several sociocultural and regional grounds. Coupled with the long-term population movements and historical conditions, the recent urbanization processes shaped the sociolinguistic make up of many regions, and yielded significant sociolinguistic outcomes. Extensive language contact between speakers of different socioeconomic backgrounds in the rural and urban areas gave rise to sharp and fine-tuned linguistic demarcations across various social categories. The recent globalization processes played a major role in the emergence and dissemination of new linguistic practices, such as linguistic neologism, ethnic crossing and the use of lexical borrowing and code switching in social media by teens.
